“The leader of a boyband and an entertainment reporter are forced into many outrageous situations after they switched bodies. Jiang Yi is a big star in the entertainment industry. He is the cold and distant leader of a popular boy band. In reality, he’s simply not good at expressing himself ever since his parents divorced when he was young. Meanwhile, Yu Sheng Sheng has become an entertainment reporter who keeps running up against a stone wall at work. Their lives were not meant to intersect, but an accident results in the two exchanging bodies on their birthday which happens to fall on the same day. The sudden change catch them off guard and with only each other to turn to for support in the days and nights that followed, Jiang Yi and Yu Sheng Sheng gradually fall in love.”

Two self-selected melodies for this theme:

Song: Dive Into You by Loving Caliber

“It doesn’t even make sense why I think about you

It was only one night, only that time
And it’s not my style
To be caught up in the middle like this
‘Cause now I dream about you
I was probably too drunk, it’s blurry but I’ve
Got the image of you
Running circles in my mind right now

And it could fade away but it probably won’t
And I should let it be

But I’m gonna dive, dive into you
And maybe I’ll drown but what can I do?
And it will be alright to let me down
Rather we try than let these feelings slide
So I’m gonna dive, dive into you…”

Song: First Time by Seven Lions, SLANDER, & Dabin Feat. Dylan Matthew (Acoustic)

“In the darkness

All I see is you, you

When I’m lost, you lead me home
It’s true, oh

So don’t stop now
I’m falling for you, I can’t lie
I wanted you to stay
‘Cause it’s hard to run away
So don’t stop now
I’m falling for you, I can’t lie
I wanted you to stay
‘Cause it’s hard to run away
Yeah, it’s hard to run away

Oh, feels like we’re falling for the first time
Oh, this is exactly what it feels like
When I can’t go to sleep unless you’re laying next to me
Oh, feels like we’re falling for the first time…”

BrownieJiang Yi is one-third of a popular boy band. He isn’t your average cold just-for-the-hell-of-it type of male lead which I won’t deny I made that presumption when I first started watching the drama. To me, he came across as someone distant who didn’t like to communicate with the public or rather, he wasn’t as enthusiastic as a celebrity should be when meeting fans (I’m laughing out loud, right now). He seemed a bit awkward initially as well, but once we start to get to know a little bit more about him and his background, you’ll start to understand why he seems distant and weird. Due to his childhood, and whilst Jiang Yi does have his bandmates around him, he is a very closed up and lonely person. That all changes not long after meeting Yu Sheng Sheng.

His smile is just priceless and so contagious, making everyone smiling widely!

I’m sure some of you remember this scene from the drama!  [Note: From C.A. Magazine Cover photoshoot}

Cryssy:  Yu Sheng Sheng is surely not your ordinary entertainment reporter! “Why?” you might ask. Because even though she leads a hard-working life, encountering many setbacks and awful prejudices from the people she encounters, she always takes each challenge head-on, steady but without fear as this bold attitude of hers and a warm smile starts to slowly change Jiang Yi’s awful first impression of her, as a harmful tabloid reporter, who’s only out for juicy scandals.

As if fate played a bad joke on them, after a few days, one fateful night, their souls suddenly get intertwined after a strange incident in an elevator. From this point onwards, Sheng Sheng and Jiang Yi are forced to rely on each other, setting some funny rules for their exchanged lifestyles, but eventually ending up feeling all kinds of moods, from happiness to anger, sadness, worry and even longing, turning slowly into first love, as she tries to bring back the colors into his unbelievably bland life, becoming a sunflower, that sheds light into his closed-off heart, by always finding the real him behind the mask he hides away, first becoming friends, then lovers, both getting to learn the power of the healing process, comforting each other during the impending storms of life, as they try to build a place meant for them called home.

Major supporting roles:  Huang Hai Bing as Yu Guo Hua [Sheng Sheng’s father]

BrownieYu Guo Hua was honestly one of the best fathers I’ve ever had the pleasure to watch. There are not that many parents in dramaworld that actually love and support their children wholeheartedly and unconditionally, so when I saw how strong his love for Yu Sheng Sheng was, it honestly melted my heart! If I could be adopted in some parallel universe, I’d hope someone like him would be my father. I felt that the father-daughter bond could’ve been shown slightly more, but honestly, that’s more to do with the fact that loving parents are what I seek in dramas, so I feel like I was a bit starved. Or I am a little too greedy? Either way, family time in the Yu household means everything.

Zhang Lei as Jiang Dong Hai [Jiang Yi’s father]

Cryssy Jiang Dong Hai is not the kind of parent anyone would want to have. In fact couldn’t be any worse, because he has a very distant and cold relationship with Jiang Yi ever since his childhood days, since he was always neglecting him and his needs, be it emotionally or physically, only drinking away his anger or sorrows, until their relationship started to be shattered even further, to the point of no return, giving Jiang Yi only heartache, unwanted responsibilities, nightmares and awful misunderstandings that still remain entangled in the present, even as a grown-up, despite his surging popularity as an idol band leader. Because he was completely isolated from affection as a child, Jiang Yi now lives with fake smiles, scars and painful memories, as he distances himself even more from his stepmother and little sister. Though a  hidden reason must exist for all of this, otherwise, it will just be too sad to be true. In time, I believe even the darkest clouds will disappear so that the father and son will eventually start to rethink twice the importance of family and communication, which was never present in their lives before.

Comedy with truly relatable moments that bring out the potential even further:

Brownie:  About episodes 1 up to 13

In this half of the drama, we are getting introduced to Sheng Sheng’s and Jiang Yi’s both private and professional lives but more comes to light after the swap has taken place. We also witness them trying to place each other whilst keeping the swap completely under wraps, some people notice, but they don’t really question it more than the average person would. I mean, who would? I think I struggled with the first few episodes, but I thought the first half was really funny as the actors were doing each other’s jobs while being in the presence of each other‘s families and peers.

(GiF image source: Weibo)

Cryssy:  About episodes 14 up to 26

The second part becomes more intriguing because the main characters will begin experimenting with all sorts of methods to switch their own souls back in their rightful place, from kissing, to more skinship, with foot baths, slow-motion karate moves, tiptoe speedrunning, yoga, meditation and even watching scary horror movies, to stimulate their own moods in the funniest ways possible, but that’s not all…

There comes a moment where Sheng Sheng and Jiang Yi finally give in to the inner voice of their heartbeats with a tearful and touching romantic confession: “I want you. I want to put into my arms, take care of you and treat you like the apple of my eye… Although you are one of the stars in the sky, I can’t just look at you from afar. I want to walk towards you, I want to touch you,  to hold you. I’m selfish when it comes to you.” (From episode 16)

Everything seems fine and quiet, but life isn’t always a smooth ride since both of them will have to make some hard decisions regarding their families, future and love, especially since the rumors and public opinions suddenly invade their privacy to a hurtful degree, as someone is bound to suffer from the unjust repercussions. Actually, this story tries in many ways to get rid of all kinds of prejudices and stereotypes that are present in the common everyday life of people, abording subjects such as gender differences versus equality, popularity, family and the harsh reality of broken relationships, workplace abuse and even various aspects about health in general.

Here is one more quote that really moved me: “One day in life, you’d meet someone as if you’ve switched bodies with. You’ll understand each other, respect each other, you’ll be fond of each other. There will be unique involvement and connection to the other person. You sparkle like the stars in the eyes of the other person. Dazzling and glistering.” (From episode 26)

Brownie:  It is no secret to some that I really struggled to watch this for several reasons, but on the whole, I found myself enjoying this drama. I thought the actors played each others roles perfectly. They managed to tug at my heartstrings, especially during those emotional scenes. I am even happier about the fact that nobody tried to put either lead in danger like most romcoms. This was just simple and enjoyable fluff that came at just about the right time if you need something light, fun and interesting to watch after those heavy dramas. I will admit that I did stop watching with 19 mins to spare as I have read some people saying the ending wasn’t satisfying, and I feel where I stopped watching was more than fine.

Cryssy: For once, I truly adored the subtle and gorgeous cinematography that was completed with a gentle touch coming from the soundtracks and props, such as clothes, teapots, houses, hotel rooms and even ice cream. Never seen a production that put so much effort into these tiny details until now! To sum it up, this would be the perfect treat to watch during the weekends since it has such a lighthearted and fun story to remember, with a great plot and amazing acting skills that truly helped to maximise the true potential for everything, even if for some the ending might seem a little too rushed. I won’t say anything more, you’ll have to see the actual ending for yourselves, otherwise, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise, right?
